The biggest shopping day of the year comes the day after thanksgiving, and it’s no stranger to record setting sales figures. Cyber Monday has gained even more popularity as many shoppers prefer to shop online. How much are people spending online these days?
This past Sunday, online analytic company comScore reported since November 1, online sales have exceeded 13 billion, nearly 2 billion of that revenue generated solely on Black Friday.
That’s a 16 percent increase over 2011. What’s even more, this years black friday spending exceeded last years numbers by 25 percent. This years Thanksgiving earned a record setting $633 million is sales alone. Who were the biggest winners in online retail?
Amazon #1 Visited Site
comScore rounded up 5 top online retailers, Target and Apple amongst the most popular, yet Amazon proved to be the number one visited website. Amazon saw 57 million shoppers online alone. According to comScore, that’s an eleven percent increase from 2011.
Best Buy and Walmart rounded out the other top two spots in this years most visited online retailer. With numbers like these its hard to argue that online shopping is really taking precedence these days. What’s not to like. Avoiding long lines and traffic is really not a bad thing. It’s hard to eye-ball that holiday sweater gift online however. Which leads us to question, aren’t tech products easier to buy online?
Online Electronic Purchases King
Video games, accessories and the like were up significantly this year. 18 percent to be exact, yet almost every year, electronic sales outpace those of any other. Not this year however. comScore indicates that consumers bought more apparel this year than the typical computer hardware. Although there’s really no explanation for consumer buying trends, the fact remains; Black Friday 2012 was indeed a record setting day for online retailers. I guess that’s proof positive that our economy is indeed picking up.
