February 3, 2012Benefits of Dedicated Servers for Software Development
February 7, 2012The results are in for Super Bowl XLVI and the winner is? Well wait, what are we scoring? If you care about the game, like many of my New York friends, then the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots, 21-17. If you are like me and care about your ‘squares’ during the game (and you had my luck last night), you may have won the first two quarters with the winning numbers being NYG 9, NE 0. If you are like my Mother then you probably only watched the commercials and half-time show and are still wondering (and watching) for who had the best commercial. If you are a tech and social media person you may be wondering who won the Burst Bowl and Brand Bowl.
Burst Bowl 2012:
The Burst Bowl evaluates websites on their uptime and quickest load time. In other words, the score depends on how fast the site displays its title and content plus how fast it takes to become interactive. Honda, Disney, and the NFL ranked among the worst with Honda’s site taking just over 2 seconds to load a 400.4 kilobytes site. However M&M’s site ended up taking the longest to load out of the top 10 spots.
Although these four companies may be a little upset with their IT department it is nothing compared to the pain Coca-Cola, Acura, and Act of Valor feel. Coca-Cola could not help the Polar Bears last night due the site being taken down; it took too long to load their 3MB site. Acura could not promote their new car leaving potential customers wondering and waiting for the site to come back online. Act of Valor, one of the most talked about movies, went down every time the ad played resulting in about 30 minutes of downtime and 5x slower load time. If these major sites cannot maintain uptime, it begs the question, what dedicated servers are they using?
The winner is… Kia
Runner ups: Budweiser and Chrysler experienced no downtime and high load speeds. Kia scored a high 99 for having a .42 load time definitely confirming their slogan, ‘the power of surprise.’ To compare car companies, Chrysler’s 400 kilobytes page loaded in .84 seconds opposed to Honda who took over 2 seconds. The one and only alcohol related company ranked in the Burst Bowl, Budweiser, got second with a load time of .49, truly making it ‘the king of beers,’ or rather ‘king of uptime.’
Brand Bowl 2012
The Brand Bowl monitors the public reaction to commercials during the Super Bowl, by way of Twitter. By tracking keywords, the Brand Bowl officials calculate the total number of tweets about the brand plus whatever their net sentiment is. The net sentiment is calculated by computing positive tweets plus neutral tweets minus negative tweets divided by total brand tweets (did you get that?).
The winner is… Doritos
The end result calculated that Doritos came in first place with a score of 9, 48,687 tweets, and 29% sentiment. H&M, second only to Doritos, followed behind with 43,970 tweets. The highest sentiment is awarded to M&M’s with 41%. The lowest scores were given to Bud Light and Coca-Cola, both receiving a score of 3 and the lowest tweets on the list.
